I was born the youngest of 3 children
In the suburbs of Chicago
In my mom’s hometown with family all around
In a colonial, white picked fence, picturesque 3 story house
Uprooted at the age of 5
To a tiny lake town
In the thumb of Michigan
In the middle of a winding dirt road in the woods
In a dark, woody picturesque 3 story home
We laid roots for 13 years
And then I went to college
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin
In the heart of the land of beer and cheese
In a dirty, grungy, picturesque 3 story college apartment
My parents moved west
To a liberal valley near the Rockies
In Denver, Colorado
To a quant, quiet neighborhood
In a modern, remodeled picturesque 3 bedroom condo
I was accepted to Teach for America
A place foreign to me
In Dallas, Texas
In a chic, industrial, picturesque loft
In a city that made my skin crawl
Democracy had me hooked
Time for the big Apple
In Harlem, New York
In a overpriced, picturesque studio apartment
In love with a Guinean and a Pitt
I’m home.

Kelly is a MALS student in Urban Education at The Graduate Center CUNY. She is an Assistant Principal at a charter school in Harlem. Prior to being an Assistant Principal, she taught for six years, three years as a public high school English Literature teacher in Dallas, TX and three years as a charter school 7th and 8th grade reading teacher in Harlem, NY. She was part of the 2010 Teach for America Cohort in Dallas, TX. When Kelly is not working on graduate school or at school working, she enjoys reading young adult literature (so she can pass the good books off to her students), relaxing with her husband and their dog, and getting lost in the streets of NYC. When possible, she likes traveling around the states to see distant friends and families and visiting places around the world she has not yet been.
