V. Reading Assignment: We will read four different articles that chronicle the evolution and politics of #BlackGirlMagic together:

• BBC News: "Why are people arguing about 'Black Girl Magic'? BBC News" (January 16, 2016)
•  Demetria Lucas D'Oyley:  "Elle, you just don’t understand #BlackGirlMagic" (January 14, 2016).
• LA Times: "Why everyone's saying 'Black Girls are Magic'" (September 9, 2015) 

VI. Writing Assignment: Jot down notes on the page, on your phone, on your screen, however you prefer to compose, on the following:

1. What's important here to know/remember about the definition and political location of #BGM?
2. Now let's build the argument that the course intends to make... did #BGM really just come out of nooowhere?
   

• What is #BGM's relationship to Black Feminist organizing/ statement-making like the Combahee River Collective Statement?
  
• What is #BGM's relationship to Black Queer Feminist Rhetorics that Barbara Ransby locates in #BlackLivesMatter and the Movement for Black Lives? 
  
• What is #BGM's relationship to Black Queer Feminist Rhetorics like Audre Lorde's Transformation of Silence and Anger?  
  
• What is #BGM's relationship to Digital Blackness today?  Pretend that you are explaining this to Black girls... what will you tell THEM about the connections and histories?

VII. Small Group Sharing: Share what you wrote/thought for #5 above about #BGM.  

1. Choose a facilitator for today who will collect your thoughts and discussions.  The facilitators can create a bulleted list... or you can be more adventurous and do something like write a letter to... Black Girls Who Are Looking for Magic When The Rainbow is Enuf
2. Facilitators need to write something up... we will collate and collect this as our own statement.  Email your notes to [email protected] or submit your handwritten notes.
